Manpower, Funds, the Only Problems of Nigerian Military

Before now, many people, some of them knowledgeable others not, have said that the Nigerian military is ill-equipped to handle the myriad of security challenges bedeviling the country.
Some, including a former governor of the state worst hit by the attacks, Borno, in the person of Mr Kashim Shettima, now a senator, even go as far as saying that the armed group, Boko Haram, is better equipped than the Nigerian military fighting it.
“Boko Haram are better armed and are better motivated than our own troops,” said Kashim Shettima in 2014 when he was a governor. “Given the present state of affairs, it is absolutely impossible for us to defeat Boko Haram. readmore

COVID-19: Lawyers Fault Nigerians Threatening To Sue Chinese Government…

Human rights lawyers have reacted to a plan by some aggrieved Nigerians to file a lawsuit against the Chinese Government for damages and alleged negligence which has led to many deaths and paralysed the global economy.
The Nigerians had, in a petition, given China 14-day ultimatum to pay the sum of $200billion as compensation for the losses incurred as a result of the pandemic, saying failure to do so would lead to legal action.
A human rights lawyer, Tope Akinode, said the proposed lawsuit was dead on arrival, adding that the processes ought to have been instituted by the Nigerian government instead of individual citizens. readmore

COMECE Urges Defence of Christians in Nigeria

The commission representing the European Union’s Catholic bishops, COMECE, has demanded international measures to protect Christians in Nigeria from growing Islamist and tribal terror attacks.
“In the context of the growing persecution against Christian communities, COMECE calls on the EU and its member-states, as well as the entire international community, to increase their efforts to stop the violence,” the Brussels-based commission said. “We call for diplomatic, political and financial instruments to assist the Nigerian authorities in halting the violence, bringing the criminals to justice and supporting the victims.” readmore

SERAP Takes Wike, FG to ECOWAS Court Over Rights…

A human rights group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has sued Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and the Federal Government over the “brutal crackdown, repression and grave violation and abuse of human rights of Rivers State people.”
The suit, marked ECW/CCJ/APP/20/20, was filed last Friday on SERAP’s behalf by its solicitors, Kolawole Oluwadare, Atinuke Adejuyigbe and Opeyemi Owolabi, at the ECOWAS Court of Justice in Abuja. readmore

Victims of Boko Haram Feel like Strangers When They…

During the past ten years of Boko Haram’s campaign against the Nigerian state, over 27,000 people have been killed, hundreds kidnapped and thousands displaced.
While a lot of attention has been devoted to understanding the reasons, causes and patterns of Boko Haram’s activities, very little attention has been invested in understanding their victims. More specifically, little research has been done on the plight of people who were originally from the southern states and lived in the north for decades until they became targets of Boko Haram. Research could inform efforts to help them adjust to the changes in their lives.readmore
